RC Prints Most photographs are RC prints. They consist of a paper carrier backing, emultion (where the image is), and a plastic laminate, or resin coating. They undergo liquid baths during developing so temporary submersion does little harm. The cleaning and drying steps are critical to salvaging them.
Inkjet Prints Even though most photo-quality ink and paper will resist fading, the ink is aqueous, or water soluble, so it will bleed and run once saturated with water. Most inkjet prints can not be salvaged when wet or cleaned with any liquid solution. Hopefully the digital photos from which your inkjet prints were made are still archived elsewhere.
Dye-Sub Prints These are usually made at retail instant-print centers like the Kodak Picture Maker®. These feel more like RC prints since they have a plastic coating, but there is dye-ink in or under the coating so they will bleed once saturated. Most dye-sub prints can not be salvaged if wet or cleaned with any liquid solution.
